Photographed St. John the Baptist Chapel, Elkhart, Illinois
It was a beautiful Autumn morning as I drove to Elkhart, Illinois to capture the historical St. John the Baptists Chapel, listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The fall leaves and lighting so beautiful as it shown on the chapel and surround cemetery.
This beautiful Gothic Revival style Episcopalian Chapel is located in Elkhart Cemetery on Elkhart Hill, one of the highest spots in Central Illinois. The Chapel was constructed in 1890 by the Culver Stone and Marble Company of Springfield as a memorial to John Dean Gillett (1819-1888), a prominent rancher in Logan County who was once dubbed "The Cattle King Of The World" by the London Gazette. The Chapel is owned and operated by the proprietors of the Old Gillett Farm, and is the only privately owned and operated church in Illinois. Constructed by the Culver Stone and Marble Company of Springfield, it is one of the few remaining Culver buildings in the area. Designed in Gothic Revival style, it houses one of thee oldest working pipe organs in the state (built by Hook and Hasting Company out of Boston) Beautiful Tiffany style stained-glass windows grace the interior of this historic Chapel.
